The
rapidly-growing metropolitan area of Dallas and Fort Worth is served by
two airports. Love Field, the city’s first airport, began as a military
airfield during the First World War, and now serves domestic flights.
It is located 6 miles (10 km) from downtown Dallas. As airplanes grew in
size and number, Love Field became congested and Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport (DFW) was opened in 1973 and is 21 miles (34 km)
from the city. It is the second largest airport in the United States and
handles international traffic.
